Course Overview
This qualification is designed to support individuals who wish to become a paediatric first aider in a workplace with responsibility for the welfare of infants and children. The course meets the requirements for Paediatric First Aid outlined in the Early Years Foundation Stage.
The qualification is structured into two mandatory units:
- Unit 1: Emergency Paediatric First Aid: This unit covers the role and responsibilities of a first aider, assessing emergency situations, and providing first aid for unresponsive casualties, choking, external bleeding, shock, and minor injuries.
- Unit 2: Managing Paediatric Illness, Injuries and Emergencies: This unit focuses on providing first aid for injuries to bones, muscles, joints, head, and spine. It also covers acute medical conditions, sudden illnesses, extreme temperatures, electric shock, burns, scalds, poisoning, and anaphylaxis.
Duration & Entry Requirements
- Duration: The course requires a minimum of 12 contact hours, delivered over a period of at least two days. The total qualification time is 15 hours. The entire training and assessment must be completed within a 7-week period, which includes any distance learning.
- Entry Requirements: Learners must be at least 16 years of age prior to certification. It is also recommended that learners have a minimum of Level 1 in English to be able to complete the assessment.
Assessment
This qualification is graded as:
Pass/Fail, and learners must pass each of the following components:
- Practical Assessment: This is an ongoing assessment where learners are required to demonstrate practical paediatric first aid skills throughout the course.
- Multiple-Choice Examination: Learners must pass a 33-question multiple-choice theory paper with a minimum score of 70% (23 out of 33). This assessment can be completed towards the end of each unit or after the theory learning has been completed.
Certification
The qualification is valid for a period of 3 years, after which point learners will need to retake the course to remain certified. It is also recommended that learners refresh their knowledge annually.
